“Tortugas” shipwreck site

A Spanish colonial shipwreck from the 1622 fleet discovered approximately 1500 feet deep near the Dry Tortugas was the first ever deep-ocean remotely-operated archaeological excavation of a Spanish colonial shipwreck. Nearly 17000 artifacts – some as small as seeds and pearls – were recovered from the shipwreck site during the 1990-1991 excavation.

Odyssey Marine Exploration’s SS Republic┬« shipwreck was discovered nearly 1700 feet deep. The SS Republic was Civil War-era paddlewheel steamer which sank in 1865 and was discovered by Odyssey in 2003.
