Vlog – Metal Detecting and Treasure Hunting in Drained Lakes

Filed under: Shipwreck — Tags: , , , , , , — admin @ 3:06 pm Berkley Lake, in Denver, CO. is being drained as part of a project that includes screening a walking trail from I-70 with a berm, trees and indigenous grasses. This is a welcome event for many of the treasure hunters in the area. As most treasure hunters know, it doesn’t get much better than this type of scenario for us. Phil LaRocco a local treasure hunter said “I was here with my father in 1976 when the lake was low. He found 67 gold and silver rings in two weeks.” “We’re waiting for the water to get past that,” he said. “That’s where the diving board was.” LaRocco started out at 5 am Thursday, and by noon he had collected a cache including 13 rings, a 1935 buffalo nickel, a silver Mercury dime and lots of wheat pennies. Joe Fortunato said “People used to swim and play here in the water and lose things like bracelets and rings,” he said. “We’re finding things people lost 50 or 60 years ago.” Doug Sagrillo said “Fishing gear, watches, jewelry, rings,” he said. “It’s like treasure hunting, with the price of gold and silver these days.” The project is due to be complete until June of next year. So there is plenty of time for all you treasure hunters who live nearby or who may be passing through. Lakes in the area have been lucrative in the past too; they have produced treasures in the past. In 1959, law enforcement divers on a training dive in Rocky Mountain Lake Park, also in the Berkeley area found four safes, in the water including one that
Video Rating: 4 / 5 Episode features Bob Howard of central California. He gave up his day job at HP to go full time into prospecting. The episode also features Mike Howard of Eureka. He’ll explore the underbrush at Riverside Park in Redding and share some of his unique finds dating back to before the Civil War.

  2. @N1Rigger Naw… I went out there about 50 times, and all I saw anybody find was pulltabs and moldy duck bones. The only old nickels I ever hear about anybody finding around here are from OHIO! You saw all the digging along the edge? I did about a 5th of that, and all I found for my efforts was ONE MEMORIAL PENNY. I think you were detecting the lake at Cherry Creek State Park or something…..

  3. @plehbah And I am POSITIVE It was Berkley lake. I have lived here my whole life, I think I know what drained lake I was metal detecting in! The nickel was found at the southwest corner of Berkley lake, Along with a Clay Pigeon from the Dickey Bird Target and Trap Co dated 1897.

  5. @StowAlex (Sorry for the Delay, somehow your reply was marked as spam so i didn’t see it) StowAlex, the question I have for you is…Is this beach area salt water or no. If it is salt water and lets say you have a budget in the 600.00-700.00. I’d go with A Tesoro Tiger Shark. In wet salt conditions, changes in the conductivity in the sand causealot of problems and the Tiger Shark has circuitry to comabt that. If not salt water then I’d go with the AT-Pro.

  6. @81Kush 10 years sounds “common law” to me! Forget the loss of your 14K gold ring with 10 diamonds that you found in the lake. She owns half of EVERYTHING!

  28. The show or at least this episode is partially funded by Whites Electronics….so you can guess it is going to be some kind of Whites detector. I like Whites units, but I use a Fisher Gold Bug.

    Comment by Suninyourhands — February 1, 2012 @ 1:22 am

  29. It looks like it might be a Whites of some kind…probably an MXT or M6 or latest version Goldmaster.

  31. Peace. There are still more excellent things than these. As God proclaims, “Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” -(Proverbs 8:10-11)-. “For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life unto them that have it.” -(Ecclesiastes 7:12)- God Bless
