The Benefits Of Recordkeeping In Metal Detecting And Coin Shooting – Part 2 Of 2

The most successful metal detecting and coin shooting enthusiasts remember where and when they found silver and gold. And they remember this with the help of recordkeeping — it clearly shows them the patterns in their detecting adventures. In my previous article, part 1 of 2, I talked about using journal books, and now I will discuss software solutions.

Recordkeeping Software

If you have a Windows computer, you may want to try the software package from Ginkgoware. Their software stores all of the above information, plus much more. It’s another level of sophistication, and you’ll need some computer knowledge and some extra time to input the information.

Besides the basic information above, the Ginkgoware software also records the exact address, latitude and longitude, total time on site, miscellaneous comments, and a detailed list of all items found. There’s also room for lots of detailed information. For each item, you can record the type of coin or object, the quantity, and the fair-market price.

The general advantage of software is to manipulate the information easily, and to make printouts. The printouts are handy to bring to meetings with other detecting friends, or to prospective buyers of your coins and finds.

The graphic above is an actual screen shot of the software by Ginkgoware. They’ve been offering this software for many years, and it seems to be updated every few months. The other thing you need to know about this software is that it’s free but has sponsor ads. If you’d like to download it, look for the links below.

When I talk to my metal detecting friends, they always discuss the great locations they’ve visited and the great things they’ve found. Using the recordkeeping ideas in this article, you’ll be able to clearly remember where you detected and how much you found. So, the next time you’re planning an outing, it’ll be easy to decide on revisiting a great location or trying a new one.
